Install the browser extension

Add the WorkMonitor extension from your browser's store, then sign in to it once. It records which site you are on — the domain only — for the working time that never touches a desktop app.

Who this is for

Anyone whose work happens in browser tabs. It is a separate thing from the desktop agent and can be used on its own: it enrols as its own browser device under your account, so a machine can have the desktop agent, the extension, or both.

Steps

  1. On the Get the agent screen, select the store button for the browser you are reading in — Add to Chrome, Add to Edge or Get it for Firefox. It opens that browser's own store page.
  2. Add it there, the way you add any extension.
  3. Open the WorkMonitor icon in the toolbar and sign in with your work email and password. The browser enrols itself; there is no code to copy across and no address to type.

If your company runs WorkMonitor on its own server, open Advanced in that popup first and point it at your company's API address.

What it records

  • The domain of the site in the tab in front of you — github.com, not the page, the address bar's full path, the query, or anything on the page.
  • How long that tab is the one in front.

It does not read page content, does not take screenshots, and has nothing to do with what you type. What your workspace then does with the domain — whether it counts as work — is set by your workspace's own rules.

Which browsers

Chrome, Edge and Firefox each have a store listing, and the store build updates itself when a new version is published. Brave and Arc take the Chrome one.

There is no Safari version of the extension.

Installing it across a company

Each store listing has a .zip of the same build beside it on the download screen, for pushing the extension out by policy — which is how most IT teams deploy an extension in any case. Two things to know before you take that route:

  • A build loaded from a .zip does not update itself. You ship the next one the same way you shipped this one.
  • Firefox discards an add-on loaded that way when the browser restarts. For Firefox, the store listing is the only install that survives a restart.

If it doesn't work

  • The icon isn't in the toolbar. Chrome and Edge hide new extensions behind the puzzle-piece button; pin it from there.
  • You signed in but nothing appears in WorkMonitor. The browser enrols as its own device. Look under Your devices for a browser entry rather than your computer's name.
  • Your workspace uses single sign-on and the popup only offers email and password. Connect this browser with a token instead: generate one on the Get the agent screen, switch the popup to the token field and paste it.
