The difference that matters

Monitoring tools report activity. WorkMonitor reports money.

A tamper-evident trail of what was accessed, changed and exported, with productivity, capacity and payroll in the same deployment — so the spend works on days with no incident.

workmonitor.vsScreenshot-based monitoring

6differences, worked through below

  1. What an idle hour costs you

    With WorkMonitor

Each person’s week is measured against the standard you set, and the shortfall is priced at your own cost rates and rolled up by department.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

An activity percentage per person. Turning it into money is a spreadsheet somebody builds at month end, if anybody does.

  2. Tracked hours that reach an invoice

    With WorkMonitor

Approved hours seed the invoice and the payroll run through one rate engine, so time that was worked becomes time that is billed without a re-key.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

Time lives in the monitoring tool and billing lives somewhere else, joined by an export and a re-key every month.

  3. Manager hours spent reviewing

    With WorkMonitor

Alerts and a scheduled digest bring the exceptions to each manager, scoped to their team. The gallery is there when you need it, not a daily chore.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

Somebody scrolls a screenshot gallery, team by team, looking for the problem.

  4. Paying for simulated activity

    With WorkMonitor

Integrity signals that detect simulated input and flag it, so a mouse jiggler shows up as what it is rather than as a productive day.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

A fixed capture interval, which everybody learns within a week and works around.

  5. A score you can act on

    With WorkMonitor

Focus and deep-work stretches with category overrides you control, and every score opens into its breakdown — so a decision built on it holds up when challenged.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

Input volume, which rewards busy-looking work and penalises reading, thinking and pair work.

  6. When a client queries the hours

    With WorkMonitor

A signed certificate the client verifies on a public page, without an account, disclosing only the fields you choose.

    Screenshot-based monitoring

A deck of screenshots, which exposes the client’s own data and still turns into a meeting.

The question we get asked

Keystroke logs are what our investigations run on. What replaces them?

A hash-chained, append-only trail of what was accessed, changed and exported, where a deleted row breaks the chain detectably — plus egress and integrity signals. It is a different kind of evidence: weaker on reconstructing exactly what somebody typed, considerably stronger on proving the log itself was not edited afterwards.

Controls — capture policy, applied on the device

What a manager gets, in one platform

  • Work expectations — the contracted standard every other number is measured against
  • A weekly performance fact per person, frozen, with the shortfall priced at your own cost rates
  • Check-ins that run themselves: ask, reply, commit, conclude, with an escalation queue for the ones nobody answers
  • Recovered value: the reduction in that priced gap, capped at what was owed and never counted on an unimproved verdict
  • Leakage beside recovery per department, with small teams folded into their parent
  • A downloadable case file for the decision that gets challenged

Switching

Bringing your Controlio history across

Nobody switches tools if it means abandoning a year of history. Export yours as CSV and the importer maps it onto our columns. There is no dedicated Controlio preset yet, so expect to line the columns up once rather than not at all.

The columns your export needs to line up with

  • email
  • date
  • minutes
  • project
  • task
  • note

Six columns, mapped once on the first import. Rows that cannot be normalised still pass through, so the importer reports exactly which ones need attention rather than rejecting the file.

After the import

Where your Controlio history lands

Imported hours sit on the same ledger as everything captured after them, so last quarter’s cost and margin read the same way as next quarter’s. Corrections append with an author and a reason rather than overwriting, which is what lets you answer why a number changed long after anyone remembers.

Payouts — a payroll run built from approved hours

When Controlio is the better answer

Keystroke content logging is a requirement. Our agents count key events without reading their content, by design.

If that is the deciding requirement, buy that instead.

Questions

Controlio alternatives: what managers ask

Answered about what WorkMonitor does, including where the answer is no.

Does WorkMonitor log keystrokes?
It counts key events to derive an activity signal, and it does not capture what was typed. If keystroke content is a hard requirement for your investigations, that is a genuine reason to stay where you are.
How do I move my Controlio data into WorkMonitor?
Export it as CSV and the importer maps it onto our columns — email, date, minutes, project, task, note. There is no dedicated preset for this vendor yet, so the columns get lined up once on the first import. Keystroke and recording history is not imported, by design. The time series lands; the evidence layer starts fresh on an append-only trail.
Can WorkMonitor record screens?
It captures screenshots under a policy you set, with blur mode and an application deny list applied on the device. It does not do continuous session recording, and there is no covert mode.
What stops an administrator from editing the monitoring record?
On Enterprise, the audit log is hash-chained and append-only, so removing a row breaks the chain and the break is detectable. Every read is logged too, administrators included — which is what makes the record worth producing when a finding is contested.
What is the best Controlio alternative for a company that wants monitoring and HR data in one place?
One platform for the evidence and the operations. WorkMonitor carries capture, the audit trail and integrity signals alongside productivity scoring, capacity, timesheets and payroll — so security, HR and finance read one record instead of exporting between three tools.
Is the audit trail included in every WorkMonitor plan?
The tamper-evident, hash-chained audit log is on Enterprise, alongside SSO, SCIM and custom retention. Capture and the policy engine work on every plan, and two seats are free to try them.

Take these with you

The software is the easy part of a rollout

Here is what we would send a manager doing one for the first time: how to read a productivity number, what to say to a remote team before anything is installed, and a policy you can adopt as written.

Point it at one team for a week.

Create the account, put the agent on a handful of desks, and leave it alone. On Friday you read the week instead of reconstructing it: hours against their projects, focus and idle per person, and the timesheets already filled in.
